  • New Update for Connect 4 Online

Posted on July 24th, 2009 chris 5 comments

Todays update of Connect 4 Online includes numerous improvements:

    • Chat History: the last 3 chat messages stay on the bottom of the screen (with nice animations)
    • Private Rooms: for players with > 1500 points and > 1700 points (instead of previously 1600+ and 1800+)
    • Highscore: Split in “Top 100″, “Around Me” (50 players before and after in the highscore), as well as “Profile” with a graph of the own points.
    • A nice graphic button for “play again” and “new game”
    • Players can now choose out of four colors for the pieces (green, blue, yellow, red)
    • Increased stability of the multiplayer engine
    • Gameservers moved to a new dedicated server to separate it from the web-applications. Databases are synced via mysql replication
    • Code cleanup & minor improvements here and there

At this point a big thanks to the users for providing us with feedback! It helped us a whole lot improving the game and the engine. We promise to keep appreciating your comments and to improve the game with good ideas! Please continue to let us know what you think via a comment or mail.

    1. Great game! Keep up this good work!

    2. first of all, thank you that you’ve integrated my previous suggestion concerning the chat history.

though, there’s another thing which bugs me a lot: the fact that people are able to quit a game without a decrease in points when they’re about to lose. they do that just by idling and pretending they’re afk so that the opponent himself will leave after 30 seconds.
due to this “feature” i’ve not been able to play a single decent game for the last 3 days. so, i’d appreciate if you took care of this so that those pretenders lose points, too.

    3. hey codethief!

i think there is a misunderstanding — if you leave after your opponent did not play for 30 seconds, you will win no points but for the opponent it counts as _lost_ and the opponent will loose exactly the same points as if he had lost the game normally.

    4. Oh, I didn’t know about that. Yet, it’s still strange then that people care so little about losing points…

Anyway, I’ve come across a bug: I started a human vs. AI game while waiting for an online opponent. Right after the local game started, the screen switched to the online multiplayer and it was my turn. I set the first token and suddenly the application crashed. I started again, accidentally began a local human vs. human game, immediately went back and got into the online multiplayer mode again where it crashed another time. The two crashes cost me 12 of my hard earned points. :(

I hope you’re able to make out the bug by following my description, because I somehow don’t expect it to be reproducable.

    5. hey again!

thanks a lot for your detailed description of the crash; i think there are quite good chances to reproduce it as it happened twice to you. as far as i remember i tested this scenario before releasing the last update — but it looks like a bug slipped into it somewhere. this will work with the next update which is due end of this week (perhaps friday).

      keep it coming! :D
